History

A classic treasure on Long Island's Gold Coast

At the turn of the 20th century, scores of wealthy Americans seeking a retreat from urban industrial life built grand country estates for themselves. These magnificent mansions were modeled after the popular Georgian architectural style, with its symmetrical design, classic proportions, and decorative elements. They were also surrounded by acres of landscaped grounds, modeled after English country houses. The North Shore of Long Island was a popular location for the country estates of wealthy New Yorkers, and was subsequently dubbed, the Gold Coast.

The Mansion at Glen Cove was designed by noted architect Charles Adams Platt in 1910 and soon after named one of the Twelve Best Country Houses in America. The 55-acre estate was the home of John Teele and Ruth Baker Pratt. John Pratt was an attorney and an executive with John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company.

Originally known as The Manor, The Mansion at Glen Cove features a stately two-story portico entrance, an elegant, baronial double staircase, imported paneling and antique fixtures that impart a feeling of being enveloped in a bygone era. The brick Georgian mansion is set in idyllic surroundings, and is one of several glamorous estates which once comprised Long Island's Gold Coast, made famous by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic book, The Great Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby is published. Written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, it follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922.

John T. Pratt passes away.

Ruth Baker Pratt is elected as a Republican to the 71st and 72nd Congresses becoming the first woman elected to Congress from New York.

The movie Sabrina is released in the U.S. Portions of the movie starring Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, and William Holden were filmed at The Mansion.

North by Northwest, considered one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films, is released in the U.S. Starring Cary Grant, portions of the movie were filmed in Glen Cove and at The Mansion.

Ruth Baker Pratt and her family maintained the estate until her death this year.
